In Paisley Prince, Townsend explores the childhood, adolescence, and early adulthood of American icon Prince Rogers Nelson (1958-2016). The author places his mercurial subject in plain view and doesn’t shy from dramatic reveals. Be a fly on the wall as Prince’s circle forms. This is the otherworldy singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, fashion designer, actor, philanthropist, and record producer at human scale. Includes over 200 short, accessible sketches (~80 words each, click the samples above). Episodes are organized chronologically — spanning two years before Prince’s birth until the announcement that his band The Revolution will film the motion picture Purple Rain.

This story was compelling but easy to relate to. I wasn’t familiar with the music, but the visual writing moved me.

Coincidentally, I read this book just days before the anniversary of Prince’s death. Being from Minneapolis, we have spent a week collectively mourning. There are so many touching tributes and innumerable discussions about his life. None, however, have covered the history of his early years with such a gentle and simple style. Townsend’s nuanced perception of Prince’s formative years is told through small vignettes — like one might experience in a flash of memory. Yet, there is incredible insight into the constituent pieces which informed his life and helped mold his incredible talent. Townsend’s narrative voice is unassuming and unbiased without being dispassionate. There are subtle undertones of melancholy, aspiration, and longing. These same feelings pervaded Prince’s life. This book is riveting, and I read it in one sitting.
